Luke lucks out in Ryder bid.

Provided by 7DAYS.ae

LUKE DONALD'S Ryder Cup bid appears to be disappearing by the second after it was announced that the Briton has withdrawn from this week's Scottish Open at Loch Lomond. The world No.19 is currently ninth on the World Points List with the top five,Aa along with the leading five on the European Points List, making it into Nick Faldo's side to do battle against the Americans in Valhalla in September.Aa But far more worrying is the fact Donald is struggling to overcome the wrist injury he picked up at the US Open. The two-time Ryder Cup hero has not played since he damaged his wrist in the final round at Torrey Pines on June 15.

"Luke's been speaking to specialists and is almost ready to resume playing, but as a precaution he's going to give it one more week," a spokesman said. Donald has slipped to 39th in the European Points List because of his absence. The world rankings represent Donald's best chance of making it on the plane to Valhalla. But he will need to find some sparkling form on his return if he is to make it into Faldo's team automatically for the big clash. However, the Chicago-based former US college star could earn one of the wild cards if he fails to get in on merit. Also missing from the Sottish Open will be Martin Kaymer, whose mother died from cancer. However the Abu Dhabi winner doesn't have the pressing need to play at Loch Lomand as he currently lies in seventh in the Ryder Cup standings, and with two wins this season has almost booked his seat on the plane. The Scottish Open has a strong field including world No.2 Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Adam Scott, Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie and Rocco Mediate, the American who lost a play-off to Tiger Woods in the US Open.
