Vic: Research finds new weapon to fight osteoporosis
MELBOURNE, Aug 27 AAP - Post-menopausal women have a new weapon to fight diseases likeosteoporosis through a fibre called inulin.
Nutritionist Jane Barnes said recent studies into post menopausal women found thatinulin, found in many vegetables, aided the body's absorption of calcium and magnesium.
"The research is very exciting," Ms Barnes said at the 2003 Foods for Life Conferenceand Exhibition in Melbourne today.
"We have shown in studies that if you increase your intake of inulin products you willincrease your intake of calcium and that calcium gets into the bones."
Doctors encourage post menopausal women to eat a diet rich in calcium and magnesiumas their bones become more vulnerable to osteoporosis.
Ms Barnes said eating fruits high in inulin increased the level of prebiotics or "goodbugs" in the body's lower gut.
These good bugs then helped transport calcium into the bones, she said.
Inulin is particularly concentrated in the vegetable chicory.
A Belgian company is extracting inulin from chicory for adding to foods like yoghurt and milk.
Ms Barnes said about 60 products, many of them dairy, could be purchased in Australiawhich are supplemented with inulin.
The 2003 Foods for Life Conference and Exhibition has attracted 800 Australian andinternational food scientists over three days and concludes today.
The event has covered topics such as obesity, nutrition, food trends and food safety.
